One of my New Year's Resolutions was to create a blog that will help educate current and future pet owners about how important it is to consider adopting from an animal shelter or rescue group, instead of from a breeder or even a pet store. I was born on the streets of Puerto Rico and was put into a shelter where, along with countless others, I hoped and prayed every day that a nice family would take me in. That day came on a beautiful Sunday afternoon on September 13, 2009, when I was flown from Puerto Rico to New York City's JFK Airport and was introduced to my foster parents, Eric and Marcela. A great organization called Stray From the Heart arranged this for me, and I'll always be grateful for the great work they do to find homes for stray dogs.
Life in a shelter is hard, as you could probably imagine. I had a very difficult time and the other dogs didn't let me eat food very often. I was very skinny when I first came to America, as you can see in the above photograph. But fret not, as I've gained a lot of weight since then.
The purpose of this blog is to share important information about adopting animals from shelters. Whether you're looking for a pure breed dog, or a mutt like myself, you'll be able to find your next best friend by rescuing a dog. AnimalShelter.org and PetFinder.com are great places to start. Best of all, rescuing an animal doesn't cost anything while getting one from a breeder or pet store will cost you lots of money.
